GIRL FEAST VENUE: LIVE On Light Square, 63 Light Square, Adelaide
DJ
PENNYDROPS
Breaking into Adelaide's electronic music scene in June of 2008, DJ Pennydrops
is no stranger to Adelaide’s Pub and Club lifestyle. After a few early stints,
drumming with alternative punk bands and performing on the alto saxophone with
numerous concert bands around Australia, her DJ career is cracking open on an
upbeat.
A self proclaimed musician, she seems to piece electronic genres together like a
finely blended static cocktail, minimising tracks by mixer and ear until the
final product is released onto the listeners, moving and shaking on the dee
floor.
Steering clear of the generic dance music codes that seem to permeate the
streets of Adelaide, she has learnt early to stick to her guns and remain honest
about the tunes she enjoys the most, and it’s now starting to show.
She can often be found ripping out electronic house beats downstairs at Bar58
until the wee hours and beyond, with her longest set currently standing at an
epic 22 hours. (As of May 2nd, 2009.)
While evoking a fresh, raw sense of sound using a variety of mixing techniques
and genres, she is proving time and again her dedication to Adelaide’s
relatively unknown house music scene.
When asked of her drive to play for such extended periods –
“I really get into playing music and educating people about the different
electro styles available. Music pulls people together and yeah, it’s the best
part of my week. I also drink copious amounts of caffeine, which helps with the
alertness levels. You get some real characters coming and going at different
stages of the mix, especially when the sets are that long. It drives me to keep
pushing boundaries. The skies the limit."
She has played at some of Adelaide's most iconic venues, cooking up live beats
for Savvy's, 6ix, Live, The Underground Arts Cafe, Mojo's, Redsquare, The
Austral and the Exchange in Gawler. She currently holds residencies at both Club
58 and The Hackney Hotel, where she can be found beat whisking together her mix
of bass driven house on Saturday nights.
As well as playing at the above mentioned venues, Pennydrops actively
participates with events in the Gay community. She has pushed play at the
monthly held, all girl party that is GIRL FEAST, and has played alongside
Adelaide artists, Neon Electric and DJ JoSH for the eccentric Feast Festival
event, known to those in the scene as The Genderf**k Ball.
Her ecleptic style ensures that she takes you on a journey with her music both
physically and mentally, opening up the dancefloor like an emotional mind field,
playground included, for those ruffling feathers and strutting out on the floor.
Spending a night with Pennydrops ensures you won't forget your senses easily,
nor will you remember what you were thinking 5minutes ago.
Check her out each weekend at the Hackney Hotel Saturday nights from 9pm and
Complex Club 58 for an epic raw recovery from 3am.
